Lutherie Urbaine

Lutherie Urbaine is generally welcomed for a "residence" within a structure or on a site: national cities, scenes, academies, festivals... and, , in the French Institutes ou Cultural Centres abroad. These residences are centered primarily on a specific work with a targeted public (defined by the partner in charge of the “residence”), composed of groups of 10 to 15 people of all ages and all levels for workshops whose result is the creation at the end of the residence. In parallel, the exhibition "Lutherie Inouïe” or "Les carnets de voyage" of Anne Cotrel can be exploited.

The participants (the majority of them have never touched a musical instrument), are associated to all the development of the project :

- collecting materials for the construction of the instrumentarium,

- musical and scenic repetitions,

- concerts on scene with the professional musicians (Urbs)

The residencies, of variable duration, are generally held over several months, even two or three years, in order to develop the musical project in situ and to be able to give the project its full rise. Our objective is to meet and to share people of and give an intercultural dimension to these creations.

Work created is in a professional context, over one duration which allows real exchanges between the artists and the public eager to imply themselves in this work.

In September 2006, Lutherie Urbaine will be in residence with the singer Bebson de la Rue from Kinshasa (DRC), in Mantes-la-Jolie (78) within the framework of “Les Rencontres de la Villette - Out the walls and of the Blues/seine Festival, at Maison populaire int Montreuil/bois (93), with the Academy of music of the city of Blanc-Mesnil (93) with the participation of "2 pièces cuisine".

In the first half of 2006, Lutherie Urbaine was welcomed for residences with the Academy of Fontenay/Bois, in the city Guyancourt and Arpajon.

Lutherie Urbaine engages a partnership with a new structure: "Quai Nord", located at Cucq in Pas-de-Calais. "Quai Nord" will inaugurate its spaces saturday September 30 at 18H30. This new place is intended for international exchanges, reception of multi-field artists in residence and for the diffusion of their works.

First exhibition : "Voyages", presented by the association "Entrelignes": from the 1st at October 8, 2006.

“Quai Nord” and “Lutherie Urbaine” will share their means and their competences for the development and the promotion of their projects, on the two sites and the two areas.

Lutherie Urbaine far from home and the international exchanges experienced : “cross fertilization”

From 2000 to 2005, what is astonishing, when looking at our ever-increasing development, is to note that, very quickly, in the same way that there was the necessary experimentation with urban participants, at the same time as the preparatory workshops for each of our residences de creation in Ile de France, we felt the need to cast ourselves farther, very much farther out.

To learn and exchange knowledge in recycling materials for instrumentation and of musical practice in large groups.

To share the joy of doing something fundamentally different together.

For the pleasure of exploring the unexplored and the unexpected in onesself.

" After Kinshasa and the Democratic Republic of Congo; after Maputo, Matola, and Mozambique; after Pigna and Corsica, an inevitable and unforeseen adventure is being born in Sana'a, Yemen.

In partnership with the Maison de métallos and City Hall of Paris, a series of instrumental and musical practice workshops took place in March 2005, allowing a group of local participants from the community of the Aqhdâms to work on the first public presentation to the French Culturel Center in Sana' a.

The celebrated oud player and singer Abdelatif Yagub is very involved in this project, so much so that a collaboration with the people of Aqhdâms, who are very disadvantaged in Yemen, appears to him to be essential. Very soon, I hope, a protocol will allow to define the modalities of this work, so that in Sana'a, as in Ile de France, a new creation can be born". Jean-Louis Mechali
