Les Urbs and their instruments

Instrumental creations

The "instrumentarium" results from the "laboratory" of "Les Urbs", "alchemical space" for research, experimentation and development of the instruments. In constant evolution, it grows rich progressively with the new musical creations. On the car parks of supermarkets, in the gutters, at the bottom of the buildings, "Les Urbs" retrieve all these "garbages"" of which the consumer society is not able to get rid, all the "indégradables" of car and building's industry.

They stockpile them, observe them, and bnag them: their great question is to know if "it sounds"!

That an old sink, that a can or that a PVC pipe makes hear interesting notes, here they are quickly subjected to the imagination of Urbs who constantly associate to ad hoc accessories to them: a bath-tub equipped with cables of elevator becomes : double bass, a clotheshanger of steam pressing :a bow, boards of building site : xylophone... All is business of good ear, opportunity to make emerged new sounds by having recourse to sandpaper, mallets for camping, whips of an old whisk, water, plactic bags and bottles to stroke the instrument.

The work of the instruments'makers is closely linked to the compositions of Jean-Louis Mechali. Those determine the orientation and the type of instrument to be conceived according to an original musical program each year: Oboloway in 2001, Liboma Minghi in 2002, Es muito loco in 2003, Nhanssalà in 2004, Trastulivoce and Bâ-Ti-boom in 2005...
